Can we use the word ´small ´ to describe the height of a person?

Hello everyone! Today I really need your help! I ´ve been teaching for years that the contrary of ´tall ´ is ´short ´ and ´small ´ because this is what I ´ve learned from school! But 2 days ago, a person from Uganda told me ´small ´ was impossible when describing a person. Only ´short ´ was correct. What do you think?

Small is fine and personally, I think it ´s a bit more polite than describing someone as short. Also, for ladies, petite which means nice and small.
If a person is overweight, small might not be appropriate as it it does refer to size in general. |
