how can you rephrase the following  sentence starting with "If"... Thank you!!!
 - Millions of fish and other sea-related animals have died because of oil spills in the last decade.
  If ........................................................................................, .....................................................................................

I can t think of any natural-sounding way to say the same thing starting with if, since "if" creates a conditional situation, and the original sentence is just a statement of fact.

This might be what is intended:
If there hadn t been oil spills in the last decade, millions of fish and other sea-related animals would not have died.

if it hadn t been for the oil spills over the last few decades, millions of fish and other sea-related animals wouldn t have died.

It s true ;dear yanogator that what fefa 101 has sent is a statement of a past fact, yet conditional type 3 would allow us to answer this question:What if the past was different?Indeed ,conditional type 3 is used to express a different past.
