Jeans were first worn in Europe, although the riveted item most people think of as "jeans" was invented in San Francisco, California. One of the odd things about English is that any article of clothing involving the legs is treated as plural, even when only one garment is involved. Jeans, pants, trousers, shorts, leggings, stockings, boxers, briefs, swim trunks, panties, and even pantyhose are all grammatically plural. |

I sit corrected, Bruce. I did not think of those items since I have never worn either of them! |

When I say "jeans", my students usually think of the material, denim. That s why they, too, tend to use it in the singular. |

Lynne, Your wardrobe might include a thong, but mine doesn t. That s why it didn t come to mind. Bruce |
