go on the underground or go by underground

I found in the textbook Today 2 two ways of saying that somebody is using underground to transport : go on the underground and  go by underground. Are both form correct? Children don t know which to learn.

I think on the underground would be the most common.. I went to see the Queen. I went on the underground. (Or I took the tube (better!)) In fact, I don t think I ve heard by the underground... but I can t say it s wrong! Hope that hasn t complicated matters further!
