confusing adjectives

Dear colleagues,

I need your help to make the choice

Do we say a big or a tall tree?                    My choice was a tall tree
A large or a big garden?                             a large garden

By the end of the questionnaire, my answers were highlighted as false
 Thx for your help

Hi miyoko. We say big and tall trees. There is a difference in nuance. Tall trees are slender, the adjective tall referring just to the height. Big trees are rounder, because big refers to width as well as height. The same for a person. If we say he is a tall man, we just mean his height and we don t get an idea of his weight. But a big man is broad or fat, as well.

Large garden, big garden, these mean absolutely the same. I can t imagine a large garden being marked as false!
