Help with the sentence

Dear ESL teachers,

I came across this sentence and I wonder if this sentence is correct.

Michael went to the hospital to see his friend.

I am puzzled with the article the in front of hospital.

I would appreciate your help.

Thank you. Gordana

Hello!

When you "go to hospital", you are a patient. When you "go to the hospital", you are a visitor.

Michael went to the hospital to see his friend. He was not a patient. He visited his friend there.

Gabriela is right. I have to go to hospital = you are going for treatment. I have to go to the hospital = you are visiting, or you work there.

The above is true for BE, in AE we seldom use "... to hospital".  We almost always add the article (the hospital).
