Hi there, The first one seems better "while studying" or "while s/he was studying" as while is commonly followed by Past Continuous. The second option would have been ok if "during" would have been followed by a noun - like his studies. best, joanna :-) |

While is followed by a clause (Subject and verb), for instance: while I was studying, I drank tea. During is followed by a noun. During studying, I drank tea. In this case studying takes the form of a gerund (ing- noun). Here are some examples: During lunch I had tea During Skiing lessons, I went fishing. While I was having lunch, I drank tea. Hope this helps. |

Elliot smith 1983 seems to be saying that the correct choice here is "during", but that is incorrect. As joannajs was implying, the "studying" in this case is just a contracted form of "while s/he was studying", so "while" is definitely the correct choice. Bruce |
