Teaching adults

Hi dear colleagues,Im asked to teach english for adults. And I have no idea how to do it.Since Im usually teaching children or teenagers. So do any of you have material to start with. And Im going to test them to see their levels , so if you have an example of a test I would be so thankful. |

Hi afoufao09,
Will you be teaching them General English or do they want to pass a particular exam?
I found some free online placement tests:
https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/test-your-english/
https://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/online-english-level-test
The British Council has many other resources.
Check out https://www.britishcouncil.tn/en/english/adults
If you want a test you can download, try:
http://www.macmillanstraightforward.com/resources/tests/
I havent looked at any of these so make sure you check them and see if they suit your needs before using them :-)
Good luck! |

Hi, I dont think that teaching adults is much different from teaching children or teens. Students at any age are like children in front of the teacher. If they are beginners, you just follow a course book that you upgrade with interesting worksheets. If they are advanced, an important thing is to find out, why they are studying English. Adults also like games and pictures that stimulate conversation. I just look for more adult pictures and for texts that are about the students interest. You will have fun, Im sure. If they are more advanced, you can have interesting discussions in the classroom. |

I think teaching adults is easier because they are more motivated and children can be such a handful sometimes. |

Adults are more motivated than kids but they find pronunciation difficult and their memory is not so good. On top of that they don have much time to practise at home which means you have to repeat things over and over again. On top of that, it dépends on the level of education they have had in their country ( I am talking about immigrants Learning French here) . What I find difficult to manage is the different "types" of learners. I have a group of refugees: some can speak a little but cant write. Some can write but not speak. Some cant write or read in their native language . So its that sort of difficulties which are difficult to deal with. But teaching adults is a very interesting humane experience! So go for it! |
