help with French idioms
|
Hey friends. Is there anybody French around? I am doing a little activity about French bread with my French conversation group. Are these idioms - to do with bread - still used? 1. Enlever
le pain de la bouche de quelqu’un.
2. Long comme
un jour sans pain.
3. Avoir du
pain sur la planche.
4. Se vendre
comme des petits pains.
5. Pour une
bouchée de pain.
6. Coller un
pain.
7. Ne pas
pouvoir etre au four at au moulin. Thanks, Lynne |

Hi Lynne, I use number 3 to 7 very easily but I think number1 and 2 are less common. I love idioms and often use them with my students, but I must acknowledge they dont know many of them. I would also suggest : Gagner son pain (ou sa croute) = earn a living Manger son pain blanc (avant son pain noir) = to have the best before something difficult Ne pas manger de ce pain là = refuse to take part in something. Cela (ça) ne mange pas de pain = It doesnt cost anything / any efforts Hope it helps Lynne. Murielle |

I havent heard number 6 "coller un pain" since Ive been in France (42 years!) but the others are used quite often except perhaps number 2. "long comme un jour sans pain".
