I have a let s say problem about an adjective clever ... how do we gradate it?
cleverER & cleverEST? that sounds weird... and not really pronouncable, esp cleverEr ...
more clever? most clever?
I was asked by my 12yrs old while doing this topic and actually got stuck ;)

As far as I m concerned it should be: CLEVER - CLEVERER - THE CLEVEREST

With some 2-syllable adjectives, we can use -er or more :
- quiet > quieter/more quiet
- clever > cleverer/more clever
- narrow > narrower/more narrow
- simple > simpler/more simple
superlative cleverest or most clever)

I agree with eng789, but particularly with those adjectives ending "e. er ow" |

Hi !
Two-syllable adjectives ending in er, -le, or ow take er and est to form the comparative and superlative forms.
Take care.

Really? you can say I am cleverer than you? I didn t realise that. I always use more or most when saying the word clever. Baswed on nothing other than habit.
Oh you are the cleverst boy - would be a very weird thing to say - to my ear that is! others obviously differ.

Definitely cleverER and cleverEST are absolutely correct. |
