Which sentence is correct?:
1. A group of students sing a song AT THE FRONT OF THE CLASS.
2. A group of students sing a song IN FRONT OF THE CLASS.

Both are correct... BUT the context is different for each sentence.
At the front of the class means that the kids are sitting near the front, or in the front rows...
In front of means they are standing in front of the class, facing their classmates, and singing to them.

wolfy collective nouns such as group, staff, family can take the verb either in the singular or plural. Both are correct.

A collective noun may either take singular or plural verb but it still it depends on how the collective noun is used in the sentence. If a collective noun functions as a group or as one then you should use a singular verb.The sentence given by Noelica the noun "group" sings as one so it shoul take a singular verb.
