a lot of or much?

Hi everybody,
I m grading tests in an extraordinarily hot Italy.

A doubt:

He didn t see a lot of his father when he was young.  (Johnn Lennon)
                                          or
He didn t see much of his father when he was young.

I know the general rule but...

Thanks a lot,
Chiara
