Putting private information on the internet

Hi Frenchfrog - I thought I would answer your second question here so other people would see i.

Last week we had an issue on ESLPrintables, where a member used photographs of other members to make a printable.  He did this without permission but with the best of intentions.

I took this issue to my teenage conversation class.  I explained what had happened, how people had felt, and the overall reactions.  (Yes I even read out some of your responses).

My students loved this topic and were still talking flat out when the bell rung an hour later!  They came up with some of the following conclusions:

1) You need to be aware that as soon as you put something on the internet it becomes public property - you no longer have control over it.

2)  The internet is communication system where people can gather information, photos, videos and music and then use it how ever they want to.

3)  Many large companies (such as Disney, Sony, Hasbro) are having trouble with maintaining control over copyrighed material so what on earth makes Joe Public (normal people) think they can control what happens to what they put on the internet.

4) People often do not feel obliged to follow the same social rules they would follow in a face to face transaction as they do not feel they will be held accountable for their actions, or lose face!  The internet is breaking down the social pressures that ensure people act humanely towards each other.

5)  People use the internet to spread child pornography and other illicite material - what makes anyone think people would balk at taking something that belongs to some teacher from some far flung country that doesnt even know there name.

6)  If you want to keep something private - then do not put it on the internet.

I am sorry to tell people - but my students came to the conclusion that this person actually does have the right to use your photograph because you published it - therefore because he used it for an educational purpose and not for profit - Why not?  we use other material - so why not a photo taken from an avatar!

I hope people find tihs interesting - i think it is a fantastic conversation topic - it has actually sparked off a request for a whole lot of other topics around using the internet!

Thanks for the question Frenchie -
Hugs - Vicki

Some days ago, there was a similar argument as regards copyrighted  images. And here is where I say: the same that happened with those photographs happens with every other material that is on the Internet. Sadly for some, many will agree with your students, Vickiii.

As far as I know (and what seems the most sensible) , if you google images, its not your fault not knowing that theyre copyrighted! and, they can be used for NON COMMERCIAL USES. I think noone makes money with the worksheets we upload here, so, I still cant understand why there are so many complaints about this. I can think about eslprintables as if it were my computers hard drive, with a back up of my ws. I dont make money with them. I use them with my students. And so I think you do, or dont you? I had a written "not so politically correct" debate with someone some time ago, because Id posted one text he autored (citing source, his name, and everything) and he was really mad at me for posting it without his consent (it seems strange to think that a well known author would ask this - well, Ill asure it, well known authors dont.)

Personally, I agree with the idea of using material from the Internet for NON COMMERCIAL USES. Lots of things are shared and sent from one person to another with no comment on who created the pictures or the texts (for instance, those emails with ppts that who knows who created them!) I totally agree with what you say in 6), if you want something to be private or just for a group of people, then, do not share it on the Internet. Then, there is some kind of material that I would not agree to share, like computer software for instance (there are free software applications similar or better than the well known ones!), because we are not "pirates", or are we?

The problem here is with pictures for our ws, so, why dont we make a list of sites with free images and clipart, so all of us can go there when looking for images?

Hope you understand my point!

Greetings!

Trelly
