How about a Robinson Crusoe type idea? You could tie it into a summer island theme and do things related to island survival and talk about tropical fruit, animals, fish, insects or building a hut and fishing... you know all that fun stuff that kids might like to do... Smile

I would choose some stories that are familiar to them in Hebrew and work on them in English.  Maybe like a simple play.

What about doing a murder mystery....

Little Red Riding Hood, or The Three little pigs, or Goldilocks and the three bears.

Ensure all children are familiar with the book first - it goes a bit like this.
Goldilocks and the Three Bears - Victim or Villian?
1) read book the week or day prior (week prior is best)
2) have children read story (week prior)
3) set up the classroom before they arrive with 5 different crime scenes
  - bear footprints pressed into talcum powder, one set of human footprints
  - three plates - 2 with porridge and spoon, 1 emptied of porridge and dirty spoon
  - three chairs - big, medium and little broken one.
  - Three beds (put blankets over some chairs) little, medium and large. - make sure little bed has blankets thrown back.
  - broken window (draw cracks on it with a whiteboard marker or tape it up with masking tape with blood on it.
 - make sure you put a few strands of gold hair and some finger prints around the place.

Split the class into six groups
- give 5 groups a crime lab notebook
- assign each of the children in group 6 a character - goldilocks, baby bear, momma bear, daddy bear - give them an information pack.  They have to prepare for an interview - make sure they are familiar with the story as they have to give their reactions.  Goldilocks can have bite marks drawn onto her legs and a wound from breaking the glass on her arms and face.
You can also have other witnesses - her mum saying she is a good girl just misunderstood.  The local mall security guard who has caught her shoplifting.
The local teacher who says she is a pain in the butt at school.
Her best friend - she planned it!
Her other best friend - she didn t plan it

The first five groups get assigned a crime scene each to investigate.
The sixth group gets familiar with the story and ensures they are ready to answer questions.

Sit students in their groups in a horse shoe formation
put a hotseat in the middle.
Call each of the victims and the perpetrator one at a time.  The groups get to ask them questions to find out if Goldilocks is a villian or victim.

Goldilocks Brief:  She was wandering lost in the forest and was hungry and tired - found the house and no one was home and she was desperate for food.

Three bears:  This horrible person broke into their home ate the last of their food, smashed the house up then smashed a window when they tried to apprehend her!

witnesses as mentioned above.

At the end of the drama each group has to compile a report giving evidence and saying if Goldilocks is a villian or victim - they can present their findings to the group

Ok Vicki how is it a murder mystery when Goldilocks is still alive and I want to see how you set up the Little Red Riding Hood and 3 Little Pigs...  Found some funny parady of those stories including one that came from the 1930 s through the guy listed below.

Ok - Crime mystery.  Pedantic!  Here I was expecting great praise for sharing an outline of a brilliant drama, reading, and writing class - instead the critics set in!!!Wink

Well with older children I use Roald Dahls revolting rhymes.

Red riding hood - Horrid child - that poor hungry wolf.  It really is justifiable to eat a GGM when you are that hungry - and the woods man that kills the wolf is a completly insane criminal - remember when he cuts the wolf open ggm jups out unscathed from the digestive juices - so how on earth was the wolf guilty of muder?  So now we put the huntsman and red riding hood on trial! Consipracy theories and all can come out with a vivid imagination.

GGM = Great grandmother
