HAPPY SAN JUAN TO ALL OF YOU!!! HAPPY MIDSUMMER´S NIGHT!!!!

Tonight is a magic night here in Spain. It s called San Juan s night (St John) and it is related to magic.
The Da de San Juan on June 24 fuses Christian tradition with ancient summer solstice celebrations. In many areas, particularly near the sea, it is customary to light large bonfires on open ground on the night of June 23 and to burn an effigy, normally a large rag doll, at the stake. These hogueras de San Juan, which are accompanied by fireworks and music, draw crowds of people wanting to dance or simply to enjoy the summer evening, until the fire dies out in the small hours. Some legends credit this night with magical qualities and talk of ghostly apparitions.

The same here in Denmark - we call it St. Hans Evening. We also have bonfires and sing songs. Isn t that great that it is celebrated all around?
We re going out in our little boat to see all the bonfires along the coast where we live.
Happy Mid-summer! L

So Joo is also celebrated in Brazil (especially in the Northeastern region) were it is VERY popular. Bonfires, square dance, costumes, songs and delicious food are always present in June. As a matter of fact, 3 saints are celebrated- St. Peter, St. John and St. Anthony in our "Festejos Juninos", the June celebrations.
