But........... We also use the word holiday in the USA.
Martin Luther King �s birthday is a national holiday.
You can say both to Have a happy holiday or happy vacation.

I usually explain it as:
We use both in the US,
vacation (holiday in GB) usually refers to taking time off from work (summer vacation) and usually going somewhere (a ski vacation)
Holiday in the US usually refers to a legal holiday (Bank Holiday in GB) established as a non-work day by the government (Christmas day is a legal holiday in the US) |
