Preposition Card Game
Print out the cards and glue to coloured poster paper and then cut. Make one set for each group in your class. This activity will work fine for groups of 2-5.
First place 3 cards down on the table to form a good sentence, for example "She is sitting / on / the chair". The students are then dealt three cards each and take turns to try to place one of their cards down on another to make a new sentence. For example a student with the card "the table" could put it down to form the new sentence "She is sitting / on / the table". If unavble to make a correct new sentence, the student must pick up a new card from the pile. First student to get rid of all their cards is the winner!
A more detailed explanation on the gameplay is included with the printable.I΄ve found this activity useful in getting students to think beyond the obvious simple uses of prepositions and consider some of the more subtle applications of each preposition.
