Definition Chart Game
An important skill that ESL students need to acquire that is related to vocabulary is the ability to define words. In fact, they need to be much better at this than native speakers of a language since ESL students will more often find themselves in a situation where they don’t know a word they need to use. If your students can explain their problem words with reasonable definitions, native speakers will be able to supply the words. The game board shows most of the possible ways of defining words. Collectively the words running across the top of the board’s chart require each of the different defining methods to differentiate them from some other word on the chart. Student teams should correctly place the game pieces assigned to them on the board as quickly as possible. The first team that finishes wins. Alternatively, let every team take as long as they need to complete the task, and have some other task ready for the early finishers. Included in the game file are the game board, the game pieces, pictures for some of the game words that your students might not be familiar with, answer keys, and abbreviated versions of the chart that can be used to demo the game with your students.
