5 in a row phonic spinners 1 with scorecards and instructions
Let me describe it as a teacher led activity, though a student can take the part of the teacher or students can play in pairs or groups.
A student rolls a (large) dice and calls the number. "Four!" The teacher, out of direct sight of the students, takes a paper clip and pencil or chopstick and spins the clip around the pencil point in the ‘/sh/’ spinner and calls out the word it stops on: "crash", if the word has already been called, then spin again or cheat. Students ALWAYS start writing in the top left hand corner of their scorecard and the target is to get 5 in a row correct spellings. If they make a spelling mistake they move one place down the left hand column and start a new row. They have 7 lives though sometimes I move onto 4 in a row or less until everyone loses their 7 lives or successfully completes the challenge; it depends on the atmosphere of the class.
