Taboo Questions for Small Talk
Taboo or Not?
Cut out the following questions on strips of paper and have students in partners or groups organize them into acceptable and socially unacceptable (taboo) questions for small talk. (sometimes I have used red light, green light and yellow light to show the degree of acceptability.) Some of the questions are appropriate in some contexts, but not appropriate in other contexts. Some questions you shouldn’t ask, but wait for the other person to tell you, you can find out indirectly. These should lead to interesting discussions about sociopragmatics.
