ROLE PLAY ACTIVITY ON AN AIR CRASH
This exercise involves a whole class of students. The teacher allocates the roles to be acted out by each participant. A chairperson runs the meeting and gives each actor the floor. There is plenty of scope for lively discussion, creative thinking and clashes. The students are required to take notes and sum up/summarise the dialogues in the meeting and write the minutes of the debate. They can vote for the player they believe was the most effective and persuasive speaker. In my experience this exercise really enables students to develop their self-confidence in taking the floor and defending their point of view, learning how to field and dodge embarrassing questions and launch counter-attacks. The vocabulary flows out of the situation in a natural way. The whole activity involves emotions and provides students with a very effective learning experience in which the teacher takes a back seat. If you have the equipment you can videotape or record the sound and play it back afterwards to provide the students with feedback and a self-viewing feature. The exercise can be repeated several times with a new "cast", with a re-allocation of roles so that the vocabulary is acquired and consolidated. I would greatly appreciate your feedback and comments! Good luck!
