Modal verbs of obligation
After much searching for a fun speaking activity using past tense modal verbs of obligation I took it on myself to come up with something. This should give plenty of practice of the target language while letting the students have some fun.
Play as normal board game with following rules:
Upon landing on an obligation verb the player structures a sentence starting with “When I was 10/14/at intermediate/at high school, etc ……” and followed by ther appropriate modal verb phrase. The player themselves decide if they wish to make the sentence true or false.
Any other player can then decide to challenge and call “Liar!”. If it was a lie, then liar goes back 4 and the challenger forward 4. If it wasn’t a lie the vice versa. If it was a lie and no one challenges (everyone agrees “true”) the liar can go ahead 4.
The question mark spaces operate in the same way. A player landing on a question mark can direct a question at any player, eg “When you were 10 were you allowed to stay up til midnight?”. The answering player can decide if they wish to tell the truth or not, and only the asking player can challenge with a “liar” call to which players subsequently move back or forward 4 spaces as above.
