CAN, MAY, MUST, WILL, [BE] GOING TO
This is a handout/worksheet to help teach students about auxiliary (helping/modal) verbs. First, introduce each word to the students and explain what each means, with examples. Then have the students pair up for role play reading practice. Make sure students switch roles and read a second time.
Before the next activity, have students listen and repeat the common answers for questions containing these phrases.
For the "Challenge!" activity, students study the questions and common answers, then work in pairs. One student will read the questions while the other student tries to answer without looking at the handout. They should each ask and answer all 5 questions.
Finally, have students write their own, original sentences using these forms. They can write the sentences as questions or statements. Having this individual activity last and not numbering the lines allows for students to show what they have learned without the pressure of finishing within a time period. They can write as many or as few sentences as you see fit.
