Creative Sentence Building
I used this activity after we finished Roald Dahlīs The Witches. I explained how Dahl uses very descriptive sentences to help the reader "see" the personalities of the characters, and add emotion to the boyīs struggle to beat the Grand High Witch. We did this as a class, starting with five animals in the noun column, then did adjectives, verbs, and adverbs one at a time. Afterward, each kid used a sentence strip to write his favorite sentece, labeled each part of speech in a different color, and drew a small illustration to accompany the sentence. For example, a kid might write "Silly worm wiggles happily" and draw a little worm with a big smile.
