Verb + gerund or infinitive list
This is the 2nd worksheet that accompanies a previous handout titled "Iīm going to Alice lake this weekend". It lists verbs that go with gerunds, infinitives, or both. A contextualized sentence is also included for each verb to help understand the meaning of the verbs.
The worksheet is a reference guide but can also be used as a memorization activity to help SS understand the collocations. First, it is important to understand that there is no particular rule to determine which verbs go with ger / inf. It is something that must be memorized.
To make it easier to memorize, and to help in a speaking (this was designed for a speaking class), a great activity is to drill the forms by a call and echo activity. The rationale for this is to train the body to remember that certain verbs go with certain forms. By having SS repeat it out loud, their mouths and ears will "remember" the pattern (much like native speakers can easily tell if it īsounds rightī or not.
To do this:
1. Have the SS look over the list
2. The teacher calls out a verb - Ex. "enjoy"
3. The students respond with "Enjoy verbing"
** Note: it is vital that the SS say this rather than something like "it goes with the ing form" because thatīs not what their mouths will remember. They must *say* the form correctly, and since we donīt know what very goes after, they use the generic word īverbī to do so.
4. The teacher calls out another verb - Ex. "want"
5. The SS respond with "Want to verb"
**Note: Again, it is vital that they respond with that specific wording to get used to saying the "to" after the "want".
6. Repeat with various verbs
7. For the verbs that take both inf/ger, SS can say either "like to verb" or "like verbing". Again retain the correct form
