grammar auction - gerunds and infinitives
here is the grammar auction for the revision of infinitives and gerunds: http://www.eslprintables.com/printable.asp?id=201468#thetop
The answers are included!!! This is one of my studentsī favourite exercise for revision. This auction is to check if students can notice mistakes in sentences.
You can put students in pairs. First give your students some time to look through the sentences. Thera are 10 correct and 10 incorrect sentences. Mistakes vary. There are grammar mistakes , ,spelling mistakes etc.
Each pair has £1000 to spend. Students should bid only the correct sentences. They then record the price they have paid for each sentence on the forms. Bids start at £50, the second bid is £100, then £150, etc. The pair that buy the most correct sentences with their £1,000 are the winners. SO, if one pair spends all their money on one sentence they are unlikely to win.
You are there to invite bid. Make it more fun by using typical language of an auctioner, e.g How much am I offered for this sentence? going once, going twice, sold/gone, etc. If nobody bids for a sentence, skip it.
Get the feedback after the auction. First itīs good to do the auction, and then ask them which sentences are correct and which are incorrect and elicit mistakes. Then they count their correct sentences.
Advice:
- write down their bids because some students tend to bid more than they have :) You can write the numbers of the sentences and the bids (and the pair number) next to them, so that pairs can control each other.
- you can prepare sticks with numbers so that each pair could raise it
- you can do it as a revision of anything you want
Have fun!!
