Subjunctive Mood Card Game
Q&A: the Subjunctive Mood Card Game
I made a card game to play with my first years and review the conditional tense. (ie., If I were a bear, I would eat fish)
The game plays a lot like Apples to Apples. Each student holds three answer cards and the dealer flips over a question card. Each other player chooses an answer card from their hand and says the sentence using the conditional form while playing it.
Example:
The dealer flips over: "If you were Super Mario, what would you do?"
In my hand are the cards: "Ride the bus," "have a girlfriend," and "laugh."
I play a card and say, "If I were Super Mario, I would have a girlfriend."
Then I take an extra card from the Answer pile.
As each person plays, the dealer adds one point to that playerīs score if he or she says their sentence correctly. Then the dealer chooses a favourite response and that player earns an extra three points.
Next hand, the player to the left of the dealer deals and everything else is repeated.
This makes a good communication lesson with some grammar review as well. I plan to divide my students into groups of four to play.
Setup: print the attached document onto card stock. Make sure your printer is set up to use B4 sized paper. Use a photocopier to add page 10 or 11 to the back of the Question and Answer pages so that they are distinguishable when upside down. Cut out the cards and youīre good to go.
