Fill in the blank activities are very useful For my Ss because our syllabus is grammar-based.This is a good activity for learning the third form of the verbs and by circling the time expressions Ss learn to catch the clues when they are given mix tense exercises.Also they can differenciate since/for and understand when to use "been" and "gone"..Have a nice day..Hope it is useful for your Ss too.
