Word Substitution Exercise
This is a text where in each box a formal word has been substituted by an informal word. The list of words is in the bottom right box of the grid. This can be used online or in the classroom where the teacher asks the pupils to identify which words can be substituted. The questions can be done in any order so they can complete the easier ones first. If they are not able to identify the substitute words you can click on the C in a box. This will underline the informal word in the text. This is a big hint and when they do get the correct answer just click on the box under the C and this will reveal the correct answer. This particular exercise has four coloured buttons on the right. I use these as a scoring mechanism so that for four participants (or teams) each can be allocated a colour and when they get the correct answer click on their colour and the other colours will disappear. You can then count up at the end who got the most answers correct. I made this exercise a number of years ago and I forget where I got the text.
