Fairy Tales & Bedtime Stories
This is a PowerPoint to introduce Bedtime Stories and Fairy Tales. First, I showed the movie "Bedtime Stories" with Adam Sandler to introduce the concept. The second slide shows the common conventions of a bedtime story...common themes. Then, a version of Jack and the Beanstalk. After you read it, ask the kids to identify the themes in the story.
After that, there are pictures of common characters in bedtime stories. You can ask the kids what they know about the characters, and tell them what you know. There arenīt really any right and wrong answers; itīs just what youīve learned from listening to stories.
Next, you can make a crossword puzzle using the vocab if youīd like. I find itīs helpful to reinforce new words. And Korean kids LOVE busy work/worksheets, haha. It takes the pressure off them to perform.
After that, have the kids create their own fairy tale characters using the template I provided. If you are feeling ambitious, you can do what I did next -
Collect the new characters that the kids created. Then pass them out to groups of 4 (4 characters per group). Each group has to write a fairy tale. First they can look at the common themes slide and make an outline (which characters are good? which are bad? What are the problem and solution? etc.). Then they can make a book - put a sentence or two on each page, and illustrate it. You will get some really creative stories!
This lesson took me about 3-4 hours to complete, not counting the movie. Perfect for summer camp style activities, or a few consecutive class days!
