The People VS Macbeth
This post-reading activity takes at least 5 lessons.
Suitable for students who have read abridged version of Macbeth.
Day 1
Lessons 1-2 (70 min): Teacher introduces scenario.
Imagine that Macbeth does not die at the end of the play but is instead put on trial. Macbeth pleads ‘not guilty’ of murder. Teacher discusses with students who are the witnesses that the prosecution and defence lawyers may want to call. Teacher should not discuss with class in detail reasons the witnesses are called.
Students form into small groups, focusing on specific character(s). Students come up with questions which the prosecution and defence lawyers may want to ask the particular character(s).
Teacher collects questions and explains that each student should take up a role, from the judge, lawyers, to characters from Macbeth (number of roles depend on class size). All questions collected earlier should be passed to the lawyers now. Teacher then goes through courtroom language with class.
Homework: Students playing characters from Macbeth should know the story well and remember important quotations. Prosecution lawyers and defence lawyers should prepare questions.
Day 2
Lessons 3-4 (70 min)
The trial.
Homework: Everyone is a member of the jury. Students should come up with a verdict (guilty of murder or guilty of manslaughter), and write a report citing textual evidence justifying the verdict.
Lesson 5 (>35 min)
Discussion of reports.
