THE COGNITIVE-COMMUNICATIVE METHOD
A complex functional skill as a hierarchy of components
The teacher can draw a workable chart of functional skill components to keep track of them and to set a complex skill into motion as early as possible.
Such a chart will indicate where different functional skills overlap.
It is evident that components common to many communicative skills are likely to be given preference to.
Overlapping is least evident when we compare speech reception and production.
Skill structure analysis inspires the learner to test his own adequacy of performance with reference to a definite communicative situation.
On the other hand, when the teacher sees the learner’s failure to cope with the task, he knows exactly where to help him.
It gives the learner a better chance to fit the linguistic competencies he or she has just acquired to particular functional skill components, which increases his/her awareness of the communicative value of the language units.
