The Family Tree
I couldn´t find a suitable listening exercise for the family tree so I decided to do it myself. I hope you´ll enjoy it!
The text is at the very end of this page.
Intructions:
The teacher reads the text and the students are supposed to draw the tree of the family that is described in the text.
The students should have a blank paper and something to draw with. There was a lot of fun with my students.
Of course you can´t read it too fast but also not to slow. It all depends on your students´ level. With each "click" in the powerpoint, the next person appears. But the powerpoint is supposed to be used at the end. First, the teacher reads, students draw, and then we check it together using the powerpoint presentation. You can ask a student to give the name before "clicking" on the powerpoint. You can also ask one student to draw the family tree on the board and then check it with pps. There are plenty of ideas of how to use it. I hope you´ll enjoy it as much as my students and I did. Check everything before the classes.
**************** THE TEXT FOR THE FAMILY TREE ******************
My name’s Rose . I´ve lived in London since I was born. I’m 70. John is my husband. We’re the same age. We’ve been happily married for 50 years now. We have three amazing children: two daughters and one son. The oldest daughter, Carol is now 47. She’s a single parent. Her marriage ended in a divorce three years ago. Her son, Matt, is an only child. He’s 25 now and he has already started his own family. Carol’s daughter-in-law, Meg, is pregnant. She’s expecting Matt’s baby.
Kate, Carol’s little sister is 39. She’s married to David. It’s her second marriage. Mike her son and my grandson is 19. David is his stepfather. Kate and David have a daughter Ann. She’s 10. Ann is Mike’s half-sister. They are a close-knit family. David is the best in-law I could ever imagine.
Our only son Chris, a 49-year-old, has the nuclear family. His wife, and my daughter-in-law, Susan is the same age as our oldest daughter. Chris and Susan have two children, Peter and Alice who are twins. My granddaughter Alice is engaged to Tom and they’re getting married next summer. As for Peter and his family, his spouse is Emily and they have a beautiful daughter July. She’s 3. I’m her great-grandmother. That’s the whole family! We love each other very much!
