EFL TEACHING SLIDES Lecture 37 - CONTENT-BASED EFL
Our assumption is that a content-based class,
on one hand, enhances EFL competencies by making the language units relevant in the eyes of the learner, and,
on the other hand, ensures a broader scope of vision, better retention and more profound understanding of other disciplines, whether at secondary school, PRESETT or INSETT.
It is relevant that most of the above-mentioned requirements
can be implemented not only at the advanced level,
but also in a beginner class.
A native language context may be most helpful. It elicits the desired language competence and challenges the learners´ background experience.
For instance, in an opening EFL course for ten-year-olds, the structures "Come to…", "Let´s go to …" and the names of countries can be offered for training in the following tasks (formulated in the mother tongue, if necessary):
Some of the above-mentioned aspects need explication. Thus, to regard the world in different perspectives means the following:
Two or more scientific perspectives of the world overlapping,
Two or more personal perspectives overlapping,
An objective (scientific) and a subjective (poetic, mythological) perspectives overlapping,
A serious (scientific) perspective vs. a jocular one;
A verbal perspective vs. a non-verbal one (musical, pictorial, etc
CONCLUSION
A content-based approach to lesson planning develops linguistic insight, a palate for intellectual adventure, curiosity about the nature of things, an urge to communicate, and an aptitude for life-long learning.
