English powerpoint: Prepositions Prepositions

LESSON PLAN Subject: English Language Level: Advanced Topic: Prepositions Time: 45 minutes Language Focus: Writing and Reading Aims: • To identify prepositions in written texts; • To understand the definition of preposition; • To analyze the three different dimensions of a preposition (form, meaning and use). • To understand the differences between some prepositions (by and with, through and about, under and over) • To analyze the different meaning of prepositions to indicates different types of location (locate in space, locate in time , situation) Materials: - Projector, White board, marker, paper slips. Task Activity Description Interactions Time Anticipated problems/ solution Warm Up: Brainstorming *Engage The teacher will write down on the board the word “prepositions” and he/she will elicit from the students what they know about the topic asking question such as “What do you know about it? Can you give me some examples of prepositions?” Then the teacher explains that today they are going to do a tridimensional analysis: form, meaning and use of prepositions. T – Ss 3’ If the students feel boring about the grammar topic, the teacher will try to make this brainstorm more dynamic in order to involve them emotionally in this class. Reading + *Study In pairs, students will read pieces a short text (one short paragraph, for example). Each group will receive 1 paper slip. They are supposed to identify “prepositions” in these texts, circling it. Then, the teacher will ask how many and which prepositions did they find. Students compare their answers. The teacher will ask questions such as “Are there any words that you were in doubt if it is a preposition or not?” What is a preposition? Then he/she will explain that prepositions connect words to other parts of a sentence and have a close relationship with the word that follows, which is usually a noun. Ss – Ss T – Ss 4’ If the teacher forgets to bring the paper slips to the classroom, he/she can use any text of the student’s textbook just for the students identify prepositions in a text. Presentation *Study Now the teacher will talk about the first dimension: the form of prepositions. Using a Microsoft Power point presentation, he/she will explain these topics from “The Grammar Book”: Basic Characteristics, Co-occurrence with verbs, adjectives and nouns, lexical compounding and deletion of prepositions. T – Ss 8’ The teacher should print out the slides or put the power point presentation in a tablet/ Smartphone in case the projector doesn’t work. Presentation *Study The teacher will explain the meanings of the most common space prepositions T -Ss 5’ If the projector doesn’t work, the teacher shall use the board. Presentation *Study The teacher will show, in a chart, the different meanings of the prepositions regarding Space vs. Time. T- Ss 5’ If the projector doesn’t work, the teacher shall use the board. Activity Activate * In pais the studens will receive photocopies of a map of a ficcional Town. The teacher will tell the students they have to find a “friend” in the city. They will follow a path in the map, using their pencils, as the teacher describes it. The teacher must give a starting point. In the end, the students will say where is their “friend”. Ss-Ss 5’ The teacher should put the file of the map in a flash drive in case of forgetting the photocopies. Activity Activate * “Who´s the Killer?” activity. In group of three, students will try find out the killer using the clues. Students will use the clues (and the box with the residents´ names in it) to fill in the table. Note: The houses pictured above the table make up one side of the street that the killer lives in. When the students have ascertained the identity of the psycho killer they should write it in the space provided at the bottom.
