Teaching Paragraphs Made Easy
This short ppt is simple and to the point. I used it in 5th grade as well as in 10th grade. Same results...good writing. I used a paragraph on Goldfish found in the great book by Ann Hogue First Steps in Academic Writing. Suggestions on how to use the model:
1. Use the model to make kids write about another pet similar to the one presented in the model.
2. Use the same model to write about a pet that is completely the opposite of the one in the model.
3. Use the model to write about another animal that is more expensive and bigger.
4. Use the same model to write about a car, a bicycle, a motorbike, a house, a hotel, an airline, and whatever you can think of.
The point is to bring the kids to work from something familiar to something unfamiliar. In the end, once they have practiced ad nauseam, bring in class a pamphlet of two different cars, watches, vacations spots, or something else and have the kids discuss in groups which one would be the best and why. Make them write the a paragraph following the model.
How to write a comparison and contrast paragraph will soon follow...
Thanks and enjoy :)
