B1+-C1 Clauses of manner with: as if, as though & like.
Clauses of manner describe the way in which an action is performed. They often answer the question "how?" and are introduced by expressions like "as if," "as though," and "like."
"As if" and "as though" are typically used to describe a situation that is hypothetical or imagined. They can be followed by a verb in a past or present tense:
Past tense (suggests a situation contrary to reality): He acted as if he were the boss (but he isn’t).
Present tense (suggests something that seems true): She looks as if she knows the answer (and maybe she does).
"Like" is often used in informal contexts and can be synonymous with "as if" or "as though" but is more commonly used to make comparisons:
He runs like a professional athlete.
These clauses help add depth to descriptions by comparing actions or behaviours to something else, often highlighting perceptions, appearances, or hypothetical situations. Each clause of manner is used 7 times. Answers on page 2.
