A2-B1 Modals for deduction 1
Students should learn modals for deduction because they enable them to express logical reasoning and assumptions clearly and effectively. These modals help students distinguish between varying degrees of certainty, from strong conclusions ("must") to tentative possibilities ("might" or "could"). By mastering these, students can communicate more precisely in both spoken and written English, whether they are analysing situations, presenting arguments, or engaging in discussions. Furthermore, this skill is essential in real-life contexts, such as making educated guesses, interpreting evidence, or solving problems in academic and professional settings. First, students need to familiarise themselves with the modals and their use. Then they read the sentences to see which one is needed to complete the gap-fill. Each modal is used 4 times!
