This activity works very nicely in a summer camp over a three to four day period. On the first day I illustrated the fable by using laminated storyboard figures. I then assigned a part and an ingredient to each student. On the second day we made the actual stone soup and the students painted a backdrop for the stage. We rehearsed and put together simple costumes and props on day three and completed our camp on day four with the performance. The children loved the multifaceted aspects of this project and the child who was lucky enough to find the stone in his soup got to keep it.
