Pair work asking each other what the opposites of different words/short expressions are sheets A and B
Demo well beforehand by writing 2 lists of words with their opposites on the board Have 2 Ss stand up and, each one of them looking just at one of the lists on the board, and ask each other about the opposites of their words. E.g. student A looks at his/her words and asks B about the first word, “What’s the opposite of ___?” (big/low/crazy/etc.). Student B thinks and gives an answer. A makes a tick or a cross on the board according to B’s answer. Then it’s B’s turn.
After careful demo was done, have them ask each other in pairs usning these sheets, and without showing their words to their peer. Remind them: “How do you spell that?”, “Say that again?”, etc.. Propose/encourage helping their peers in English (gestures/phrases) and also giving the right answer right away if their peer fails to come up with the same answer as the one in the sheet.
The activity is good for “burning” stages in acquisition; most likely they “know” most of these words but need to gain efficiency in the process of recalling lexis. Also, the activity is good in the opportunity it provides for manipulation of lexis/meaning: they arrive to the word they’re looking for in their minds through an opposite, and need to manipulate language/concepts in order to do this.
