We Can Work It Out by the Beatles
General steps and ideas for teaching English with songs
1) Introduce the song and singer-songwriter (name, country, hometown) with interesting facts about the singer and song. Google the title of the song. Sites like songfacts dot com and Wikipedia are often good sources.
2) Slowly drill the missing phrases and words, defining new words and phrases, while drilling their pronunciation. For higher level students, gap out phrases instead of just single words. This helps students to listen and receive oral English more efficiently.
3) Students stand up and practice saying aloud the words and phrases in pairs checking and helping one another, then sit down.
4) While listening to the song at least twice, students write in the missing phrases or words into the blanks
5) Have students voluntarily say and/or write the answers on the blackboard. Confirm and correct their answers.
6) Explain the meaning more, if needed. Discuss the message of the song.
7) If the students really like the song, you can all memorize the lyrics and sing the song aloud. This should be done over several class meetings.
Note: I use songs as a warm-up to the main part of the lesson. Though sometimes when I first introduce a song it takes up to 25 minutes, which is much longer than a normal warm-up.
