English worksheet: Native American Song Listening + Discussion Native American Song Listening + Discussion

This lesson plan uses a song as a discussion starter about Native Americans. First, introduce the vocabulary. Then have students listen to the song and do the cloze activity. You will probably want them to listen more than once. Then have the students answer the post-listening questions about the song. I have included the full lyrics for the song as well as an interpretation of the song. The song is "Don´t Drink the Water" by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds. I particularly like this version (Live at Radio City, April 22, 2007) because it incorporates part of Woodie Guthrie´s "This Land is Your Land" in it, which is a popular American folk song that can be used to introduce the concept of irony to your students. The meanings of the two songs are very different. After my students have answered the post-listening questions, I have them discuss the meaning of the song in small groups. Many understand the meaning of the song, while others come up with different, yet acceptable meanings. I always tell them that songs are open to interpretation and that there is no one right answer.
