A logic Puzzle
This puzzle is based on the famous short man in an elevator puzzle. Works well in either a small class - where the whole class can be just one group, or a large class where you can have several groups. Print out and cut up the seven sentences - one set for each group. Students are divided into groups of 7 (or as close as possible)Each student is a given a sentence (or possibly 2). Each student has about 3 minutes to remember and learn their sentence - no writing, no talking to other team members. Students return the sentence to the teacher and the teacher hands out the worksheet (one for each group). In their groups (with a team leader that must do all the writing - to stop students simply passing the sheet around) they try and answer all the questions and the big question - why? If students are struggling to come up with an answer, after 10 minutes or so you can give the extra hint that ´Jack goes to the 22nd floor if he is not alone in the lift´. Feedback teams answers, and then if no team got the answer, reveal that jack is too short to press the button himself and uses his umbrella on rainy days. There is a powerpoint to go with this lesson that adds a bit of humour and makes things a little clearer. Lesson has worked very well in a Korean high school where almost none of the students had come accross the puzzle before. Activity lasts between 15 mins and 30 mins depending on the level, size of class and imagination of the students.
