I hope the love story will make the tedious grammar topic (reported speech) more lively :) Students are supposed to transform the sentences into reported speech and vice versa. A writing activity follows: they write and/or report a conversation. More imaginative and creative groups may use the activity as a base for a role play or inspiration for a short story writing.
