Animal Farm Chapter 5 In-class Role Play
This is a fun project that can be completed in one class. Students role-play the famous scene in which Snowball delivers his speech on the windmill and is run off by Napoleonīs dogs. Students are learning to read literature critically, and to interpret what they read. By performing the roles of the animals, students must interpret their characters and give a "reading" to the class, thus actualizing their interpretation of the characters. The activity also helps bring the story alive. In addition, students who write the speeches must extrapolate information in order to compose their own texts in the speech genre.
Another fun activity is from Chapter I. Have students sing "Beasts of England" and assign animal roles to student groups. This teaches them the vocabulary of the animal "singing" verbs Orwell uses, and they can learn the power of an anthem, while having fun being the animals.
