Acrostic Poetry Time! (A fun easy poetry form with explanation)
This worksheet explains how to make an acrostic poem in a very simple, easy to understand format. After giving step by step instructions, it also provides a few examples. My kids have really liked this activity (I used with grades 5-6 but ages can vary).
When I teach acrostic poetry, after explaining the basics to them, I ask students to give me a noun (their ideas have varied, from animals to favorite pop bands to favorite foods). Then I write it vertically on the board. Then I go line/letter by line/letter and ask them to come up with ways to describe the noun. They come up with some crazy ideas and generally laugh at the outcome.
Next, I give them time to write several of their own poems and then pick their favorite. Finally, they transfer the poem onto a fresh piece of paper and illustrate it.
This has been a hit with most kids (some need more guidance than others), but please let me know how it goes.
