roses are red (valentine´s day + rhyming)
worksheet and lesson plan. my high school students really loved this activity last year.
first, the class reads about and discusses the differences between valentine´s day in japan and the u.s.a. (change it to fit any country). then, they practice using english rhymes. (if you have time, you can have them listen to songs and circle the rhymes on printed out lyrics.) finally, they make poems using the "roses are red, violets are blue..." pattern. for a nice touch, have them write the final version on heart-shaped cards to exchange with another random student. and have students read their valentines to the class.
