Who is the lunch thief? Past tense speaking activity
This is a great activity for getting students excited about speaking english.
Students are divided into groups of 10-11, then one studentin each group is discretely assigned as the lunch thief. I do this by putting a star on their worksheet to indicate that they are the lunch thief.
Students must answer the questions on the worksheet with true or imagined answers. Then, students must make a grid with the names of the students in their group, and space to record their answers.
Students circulate amongst their group, asking each other the questions while also giving their answers as other group members ask. Students will record each group members responses to the questions on their grid.
The student who is the lunch thief will have one asnwer written in ont heir worksheet already that suggests that they were the lunch thief. I usually write in response to the question, "How did you feel at lunch yesterday?", "I felt very full." THis indicates that they had many lunches to eat! Students must think about the responses their group members give, and try to decide who the lunch thief in their group is, while the lunch thief tries to remain inconspicuous. When students have finished interviewing their group members and have chosen their lunch thief suspect, the real lunch thieves reveal themselves, often to the surprise of others.
I have found this to be a fun activity for students. They love the ´mystery´ aspect and work hard at it, while speaking a lot of english throught the classtime. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to get some movement and create interest in english int heir classroom.
