This can be played as a game. Two cards need to be matched in order to make the sentence meaningful: one card contains past simple, the other contains past continuous. When I used this material, I usually start by spreading the simple past cards and keeping the continuous. Then I call out my half of the sentence and stds have to find the other corresponding half.
