Stimulating conversation whilst having fun!!
AIM - to stimulate genuine conversation in class whilst having fun...
I teach very small groups but these can be used in larger classes if you split the students into paired groups. Each group can then interact or change articles/questions with their pair.
Give each person (or small group) a news article to read and tell them they have 10 minutes to make sure they understand it and remember as much as they can.
When the 10 minutes is up they get up and explain what their article is about without referencing the article.
Explain to the rest of the group watching that they need to make sure they undertand what their colleague is saying and if they donīt then to question them or ask them to repeat etc. Only in English!
When finished the person who has explained the article gets to ask the questions about his/her article to the rest of the class.
This causes great fun and hilarity as the group realise that perhaps they didnīt understand what their colleague was saying after all. Generally the first time round they only get 4 or 5 of the questions right. But having done it once, the next time the listeners start interacting much more, questioning their colleagues, asking them to repeat what they said, asking what certain words mean etc. Its great fun, and really helps the students with their conversational skills without making it seem like hard work!!
My students love these lessons and always ask to do them again (and again).
I hope you like them. Thanks to Yoda Schmidt who had the original idea.
